Celebrating 80 ... again!!

Every February 27th we have celebrated the birthday of two very different people -- my dad, Neal Thorpe, and Elizabeth Taylor! (Dad never welcomed our birthday greetings without reminding us who was sharing the glory of the day!) Although the entire extended Thorpe clan had returned "home" to celebrate the 80th birthdays of both Dad and Mom last summer (when almost everyone could make the trip), we decided to gather those who could for another round of festivities closer to Dad's actual day.

Gloria and I were able to coordinate our flights to arrive and depart within a few minutes of each other so it was quite easy for us, and Dad & Mom were thrilled to have "the girls" back in the basement bedrooms for a few days! We had such a great time enjoying time together as sisters, time with our brothers and their families, and time with our parents, both together and separately.

One afternoon we took Dad & Mom to see the movie "War Horse." Dad couldn't remember the last time he had been in a theater! We took Mom shopping in a cute boutique store in Provo, then had lunch at Brick Oven (one of her favorites). We took Dad for a ride in/around/through Sanpete County, stopping at his usual favorite stops. We turned on one dirt road in Milburn and eventually found ourselves in someone's private drive, which required me to make a 12-point turn on a narrow, muddy, snow-plowed road to get us heading back the right direction!
We held Dad's party appropriately at the Oak Crest Inn, since it holds many memories of special occasions for all of us over the past 40+ years, and the family completely filled the room. Neither of Dad's sisters were able to attend, but Pearl and Viv & Dan, were there to join in the fun. After dinner we presented Dad with a beautifully decorated birthday cake aflame with 80 candles. The best part of the evening was when he blew out the candles and the smoke cloud filled the room!

I am so grateful for my parents, and for the opportunity to share my love and appreciation for them and spend some quality time together. I am so blessed that my dearest friend is my sister, and I loved having a few days to be together sharing what matters most -- love for each other and our family.
